Joy Comes in the Morning

“I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.” Jeremiah 31:13b

“He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32

Weeping in the night… pain, endless questions… God? Silent. Seemingly distant. Does He care? In my weak moments I doubt even His goodness. How could a loving God allow such terrors? When I see the way my sister has suffered… Anger wells up within me and I demand an answer from God. How can You, a loving God, see this and turn away? How can You not do something? Silence. Cold, endless, silence.

God, is it wrong of me to wish that my sister’s suffering would end? That people who claim to be Your children would act like it? Isn’t it Your desire to heal? To make wrongs right? Doesn’t this brokenness make You sad, too?

Again, anger wells up inside me and I clench my fists. Raising my tear-streaked face to the sky, I beg God for mercy. God, do You see? Do You even care? This time, an answer.

“This is not the way I created My world to be. Someday, I will recreate Heaven and Earth, and everything will be made right. I Myself will wipe the tears from your eyes. There will be no more death, or crying or pain. You will see My face, and My name will be on your foreheads. Weeping may endure for this earthly night, but joy will come with the Heavenly morning. All the broken parts of this world–sin, sickness and death–will be made right. Your joy-cup will be full, and you will rejoice forever in My presence. Until then, I’m weeping with you.”

In the darkest seasons of our lives–the times it appears that God doesn’t see what we’re facing; or maybe it seems like He doesn’t care–those are the times when we need to cling to His promises.

“Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” Psalm 30:5b
